Couples Therapy

Experienced Relationship Counselling

Relationships can be one of the greatest sources of comfort and meaning in our lives — and also one of the places where we feel most confusion, hurt, or uncertainty. Many couples arrive at therapy feeling disconnected, caught in repeating arguments, or unsure how they have drifted so far from one another.

At Therapy Huddersfield, we offer couples therapy in Huddersfield and West Yorkshire, providing a calm, supportive space to slow things down and explore what is happening between you. Rather than focusing on blame or “who is right,” the work centres on understanding patterns, emotional needs, and the impact of life experiences on your relationship.

We are pleased to offer couples therapy with Gill Scott, an experienced relationship counsellor who has been working relationally with individuals, couples, and families since 1997. Gill holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Systemic Practice, the Relate Certificate in Marital and Couple Counselling, and is an Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), with her application for Senior Accredited status currently pending. This depth of training, professional recognition, and experience underpins her thoughtful and grounded approach to relationship work.

Gill offers couples and relationship counselling in Huddersfield as part of the Therapy Huddersfield team, supporting couples from across West Yorkshire, including Halifax, Brighouse, Elland, and surrounding areas.

How Couples Therapy Can Help

Couples therapy can support relationships at many different stages — whether you are in crisis, feeling quietly disconnected, or facing a specific challenge together.

Gill works with couples experiencing:

Ongoing conflict or repeated arguments

Difficulties with communication or feeling unheard

Loss of intimacy or emotional closeness

The impact of illness, disability, or long-term health conditions

Carer strain and unequal emotional or practical responsibility

Life-stage changes such as parenthood, ageing, or retirement

Extended family pressures and boundary difficulties

Blended family and step-family challenges

Sexual concerns (not psychosexual therapy)

Decisions about whether to continue or separate

Moving on after relationship breakdown

Difficulties forming relationships or repeating painful relational patterns

Couples therapy can also be helpful where one partner is experiencing depression or anxiety and the relationship itself has become strained or uncertain.

We work with couples who are seeking experienced, relationally focused couples therapy. Our practice is centrally located in Huddersfield, making sessions accessible for couples travelling from Halifax, Brighouse, Elland, and nearby areas. Many couples tell us they value working with a therapist who understands the wider context of their lives — including health, caring roles, family dynamics, culture, and life stage — rather than focusing narrowly on communication techniques alone.

A Relational, Compassionate Approach

Gill’s work is grounded in a systemic and relational understanding of emotional distress — recognising that difficulties rarely sit with one person alone, but develop within the space between people, shaped by history, health, culture, and life circumstances.

Her experience includes extensive work within NHS, IAPT, and community services, supporting couples and families affected by chronic illness, disability, bereavement, and end-of-life concerns. Gill also has specialist experience in IAPT Couple Therapy for Depression, where the relationship itself is understood as a key context for understanding and supporting recovery.

Alongside her couples work, Gill has facilitated group programmes for people moving on after divorce or separation, separating parents (including court-ordered programmes), and women rebuilding their lives after experiences of domestic abuse. She has also worked sensitively with individuals and couples from diverse cultural backgrounds, and has a particular interest in the emotional and relational needs of older adults.

Couples often describe Gill’s approach as steady, thoughtful, and non-judgemental — offering space to feel heard and understood while gently supporting difficult conversations.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. We offer in-person couples therapy at Therapy Huddersfield, supporting couples from Huddersfield and the wider West Yorkshire area.

  • No. Many couples seek therapy before things reach breaking point. Therapy can help with early signs of disconnection, communication difficulties, or unresolved tensions, as well as more acute crises.

  • This is very common. Couples therapy often begins with mixed feelings or different levels of readiness. Gill is experienced in working with this uncertainty and helping couples explore what each of you hopes for or needs from the process.

  • Yes. Gill has specific experience in IAPT Couple Therapy for Depression, where the relationship is understood as both affected by — and potentially supportive of — recovery from depression.

  • Yes. Sessions are confidential, with clear boundaries explained at the outset. Any limits to confidentiality will be discussed openly.

  • Not always. For some couples, therapy supports reconnection and repair. For others, it offers clarity, understanding, and support in making thoughtful decisions about separation. Both outcomes are approached with care and respect.

Relationships can feel complicated, painful, and overwhelming — especially when the same difficulties keep resurfacing. Couples therapy offers a space to pause, reflect, and begin understanding one another in new ways. If you’re wondering whether couples therapy in Huddersfield could be helpful for you, please do get in touch. We would be glad to talk more about how Gill or one of our team might support you.
